By hosting a hive, you get to see what it?s like to keep bees, without the work and without the costs. You also get to enjoy the benefits of all the increased pollination (more flowers and more abundant garden produce). All that is required of you is to provide a good beehive location and we?ll take care of the rest. Once the colony produces surplus honey ? which in a good first year should occur towards the end of summer ? we?ll harvest it and give you a jar of all-natural, raw honey that is totally free of the treatments and bee medications that most large scale commercial beekeepers use. If you want all-natural honey, this is it. And if you want local honey, you can?t get more local than your own back yard!
As you may have heard, the honeybee population in America and other parts of the world is in decline. Research indicates that this is due to poor-nutrition from mono-crops, diseases, pests, and pesticides. I use a pesticide-free approach in dealing with the hive pests that so often plague bees. I also refrain from feeding my bees sugar water. By hosting one or more of our hives, you?re helping to combat the collapse of the honeybee population in a way that places bee nutrition and hive health over chemical treatments.
The Minneapolis area is an excellent place to keep and cultivate bees. This area boasts an abundance of linden trees, fruit trees, large flower gardens, and even some very good wild-flower forage.
